YORK, Pa. – Sophomore hurler Rachel Johnson was named the Capital Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second-consecutive week, the league announced on Monday.
Johnson went 3-1 with one save in the circle in six appearances in Salisbury's eight contests throughout the week. The Preston, Md., native finished the week with 60 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings pitched, including double-digit strikeouts in all her starts.
She came up big against Virginia Wesleyan College early last week, relieving junior Kathryn Larson with the bases loaded and two outs. Johnson struck out the Marlin batter to end the sixth inning, allowing the Sea Gulls to hold on to a 5-3 advantage. She then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the save.
Johnson has 96 strikeouts on the year and has allowed just six earned runs for an ERA of 0.82.
Salisbury will continue play at home as it hosts the Salisbury Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Sea Gulls will begin the invitational with a 12 p.m., contest on Friday, March 15 against Capital University.
