Sea Gull offense freezes SUNY Geneseo, 18-2
SALISBURY, Md. - On a snowy and freezing Friday afternoon the Salisbury University softball team began the first day of the 2009 Sea Gull Invitational with a thunderous 18-2 victory over SUNY Geneseo in five innings at the Henry S. Parker Complex.
The Sea Gulls (5-4) got off to a strong start as the entire line-up batted in the top of the first inning as Salisbury served as the visiting team. The Gulls scored six runs off five hits highlighted by a two-run home run by junior catcher Lauren Brenneman. The homer is Brenneman's fourth of the season. The Gulls were able to bring three more runs across the plate as junior Amanda DeMoine singled in one run and senior outfielder Meaghan O'Gara (two hits, two runs, three RBIs) batted in two.
The Blue Knights (1-1) scored in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-2 but from there the Sea Gulls broke out and scored 10 unanswered runs.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Gulls once again batted around as SU scored four runs off two hits and three walks.
Salisbury led 12-2 as the teams went into the fifth inning. The Sea Gulls tacked on six more runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Starting pitcher Kelsey Mills hit a two-run home run. Three batters later the stage was set for sophomore Kristin Lord (two runs) who muscled a grand slam over the outfield fence to give SU the commanding 16-run lead. Lord knocked in six RBIs on the day.
Mills (2-2) pitched a modified no-hitter as Geneseo's two runs were scored off a throwing error in the third inning. The right-hander walked five batters and struck out six.
Junior first baseman Ali Ritter and junior outfielder Jen Cahall both scored a game-high three runs. Cahall led the Sea Gulls with three hits. Shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (two runs) added two hits and one RBI.
SU was slated to play a second game on Friday against Swarthmore College but the game was canceled because Swarthmore was not present at the field. This game will not be made up.
The Sea Gulls return to action tomorrow, March 14, as the maroon and gold will face Kean University and Shenandoah University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
