Sea Gulls finish the season ranked No. 5 in final NFCA Division III Softball Poll
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The final National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll was released on Friday and Salisbury University ascended six spots to No. 5. The Sea Gulls (40-7) collected 159 points as the maroon and gold finished sixth at the 2009 NCAA Division III Softball Championships on May 17.
Messiah College (43-4), the 2009 NCAA Division III national champion, closes out the season ranked No. 1 after not being ranked in the previous poll. The Falcons garnered all eight first-place votes and 200 points. Coe College (43-13) jumped from No. 17 to No. 2 as the national finalist received 192 points. Gustavus Adolphus College (42-9) moved from No. 25 to No. 3 as the Gusties amassed 178 points. The Jumbos from Tufts University (44-3) jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 as they collected 177 points just ahead of Salisbury, who rounds out the top five.
The Sea Gulls made their 14th NCAA tournament appearance and won the Salisbury, Md. First-Round Tournament to advance to the program's sixth Division III Softball Championship. The Sea Gulls are expected to be one of the top teams in the region in 2010 as they return 13 of 16 letterwinners and return eight starters.
