Sea Gulls fall out of the Top 10 in latest NFCA coaches' poll
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll was released Wednesday, May 6, and Salisbury University dropped two spots to No. 11 to fall out of the Top 10 as four teams leaped the Sea Gulls. The Sea Gulls (34-4) received 128 total points.
The biggest jump in this week's poll was by the University of St. Thomas (39-4) as it moved up 11 spots to No. 2 in the poll with 178 total points. The Tommies won their sixth consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship last week. The University of Texas-Tyler (34-8) also made some noise in the poll as the Patriots (157 points) moved up 10 spots into a tie for the No. 4 spot with Ohio Northern University. The Patriots were declared the winners of the American Southwest Conference on May, 3, due to unplayable field conditions. Lynchburg College, winners of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, jumped four spots to No. 6 with 147 total points. The fourth team to jump the Sea Gulls was Louisiana College (36-7) as it moved up two spots from No. 11 to No. 9 with 134 points.
Linfield College (36-4) retained its top spot for the second straight week as the Wildcats garnered all eight first-place votes and 200 points. Other notable movements from South Region teams included Emory University who crept back into the top 25 at No. 24, with 21 points, after a five-week absence. Christopher Newport University dropped out of the top 25 for the first time since March 11, a span of eight weeks.
Salisbury, which earned its 14th overall appearance in the NCAA tournament and 12th under head coach Margie Knight, is the second-seed in the Salisbury, Maryland First-Round Tournament as the field was released on Monday, May 4. Salisbury was selected as one of eight first round hosts earlier this season. The first-round tournament will run from May 7-10 at the SU Softball Complex.
