Kelsey Mills named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III National Player of the Week
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The good news keeps rolling in for the Salisbury University softball program and sophomore pitcher Kelsey Mills. On Wednesday, Mills learned that she was selected as the Louisville Slugger/ National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III National Player of the Week for March 25. This is the fourth award the Frederick, Md., native has received this week as she was named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Eastern Colleges Athletic Conference Division III Regional Pitcher of the Week and the Division III Softball-The Newsletter Regional Pitcher of the Week. This is the first national player of the week award for the SU softball program since 2001 (April Harned).
Mills had an outstanding week for the Sea Gulls (13-4) as she threw back-to-back complete game no-hitters and recorded one save. In the first game against SUNY Plattsburgh, Mills was one error away from her first collegiate perfect game as she struck out nine batters. At the plate she went 1-for-2 with one RBI. In the second game against then No. 23 Ithaca College the sophomore came in to relieve senior pitcher Stacy Davis with a 5-2 lead. Mills recorded the final three outs and even struck out one Bomber batter to earn the save. Mills returned to the circle the next day and won 11-0 as she tossed her second consecutive no-hitter, third this season, against SUNY Geneseo. Against the Knights, Mills faced 22 batters and struck out a career-high 13 and walked one batter. For the weekend, Mills threw 15 scoreless innings, struck out 23, walked one and surrendered no hits as she posted a 2-0 record and one save.
This is the second time this week a Sea Gull student-athlete has been named National Player of the Week for their respective sport as junior women's lacrosse player Beth Rhodey was named Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division III Player of the Week.
