Malarkey tabbed as CAC Co-Player of the Week
YORK, Pa. - The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly player of the week awards and Salisbury University senior second baseman Stacey Malarkey was named the softball co-recipient for the week of April 27. This is the fifth CAC Player of the Week for the SU softball team (34-4) this season. Malarkey shares the award with York (Pa.) College pitcher Brittany Therres.
Malarkey and the No. 14 Sea Gulls finished the regular season with four straight wins this past week as the maroon and gold swept doubleheaders against Virginia Wesleyan College and Washington (Md.) College. SU has now won 30 consecutive games.
Malarkey went 5-for-10 at the plate, scored six runs and had five RBIs for the week. Against VWC, Malarkey hit a double and drove in two runs. The Taneytown, Md., native crushed her team leading 11th home run against Washington last Saturday. She also received two hit by the pitch last week to increase her nation best total to 16. She leads Division III in hit by pitches per game.
Last week, Malarkey was named to the All-CAC team for the fourth straight year.
Malarkey becomes the fourth Sea Gull to be named CAC Player of the Week following fellow senior Meaghan O'Gara (April 6), junior Lauren Brenneman (March 9 and 30) and sophomore Kelsey Mills (March 23).
Salisbury, who is ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, will now wait for the official announcement of the 2009 NCAA Division III softball tournament field next Monday (May 4) to see if the Sea Gulls will make a 14th appearance in the tournament. SU has already been selected as the host of the Atlantic Region which will run from May 7-11 at the SU Softball Complex.
