SALISBURY, Md. - It was a clean sweep for the
Salisbury University softball team on Saturday at home against
Villa Julie College in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Salisbury (16-6, 4-0 CAC) defeated Villa Julie 5-1 in the first
game and needed only five innings in the second game to seal the
deal with an 11-1 victory.
Junior Stacy Davis (9-4) pitched the entire
first game and allowed only one run on five hits, walked two and
struck out two to record the win. Villa Julie (5-11, 0-8 CAC) broke
open a scoreless game in the third inning with a run off Davis. The
Gulls battled back in the bottom half of the inning as Davis helped
her own cause with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home
sophomore catcher Lauren Brenneman to tie the
game.
Salisbury scored four runs on six hits in the fifth inning as
the Sea Gulls feasted on new Mustang pitcher Julianne Roper.
Freshman right fielder Kristin Lord doubled home
junior second baseman Stacey Malarkey to give the
Gulls the 2-1 lead. Sophomore Brittany Lounge
followed with a RBI single. Then in a planned attempt to steal
second base Lounge was chased down by the Mustangs which allowed
sophomore Jen Cahall to advance home. Salisbury
added its final run with a RBI off the bat of shortstop
Kelly Waskewicz.
The Sea Gulls rode the momentum into the second game where
senior pitcher Kortni Pedlow (5-1) started the
game and earned the win. She allowed only one run on five hits,
walked five and struck out four in four innings of work. Freshman
Kim Ruppert closed out the game for the Gulls in
the fifth where she struck out two Mustangs.
The top three of Salisbury's order batted 7-for-7, six runs
scored, four RBIs, one home run, four doubles and a triple.
Waskewicz went 3-for-3 at the plate as she slammed her ninth home
run of the season in the first inning, scored three runs, doubled.
Lounge also had an excellent game at the plate as she went 2-for-2,
double, triple, scored two runs and had a RBI. Brenneman was
2-for-2, two doubles, scored twice and a RBI.
The Gulls did most of their damage in the third inning where
they scored five runs on five hits followed by four runs in the
fourth inning. Junior left fielder Meaghan O'Gara
(1-for-2, double) collected three RBIs in the third and fourth
innings. She doubled to center field to bring in two runs, Cahall
and Lord, in the third inning followed by a sacrifice fly to center
in the fourth to bring home Malarkey (two runs, two RBIs).
