Five home runs power Sea Gulls to 35 runs in sweep of Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Salisbury University softball team smashed five home runs and banged out 30 hits to sweep the doubleheader, 17-0 and 18-0, against Gallaudet University on Wednesday. The wins pushes the Sea Gulls win streak to nine games as they remain in first place and undefeated in the Capital Athletic Conference.

Salisbury (20-6, 6-0 CAC) had eight players record at least three hits on the afternoon. Junior Stacey Malarkey led the way as she was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and also drove in five RBIs which included a two-run home run in game one. Sophomore Jen Cahall (4-for-5, two runs scored) and freshman Kristen Lord (4-for-6, four runs scored) contributed four hits each and drove in four and five RBIs, respectively. Sophomores Kelly Waskewicz (two home runs in game one), Lauren Brenneman, Ali Ritter and seniors Ashley Stern and Kurisha Hoffman each recorded three hits in the two games. Freshmen Alex Winstead (three RBIs) and Kristin Lord (five RBIs) each homered in the first game and scored four runs each in the doubleheader.

The Sea Gulls improved their season shutout total to 14 games as the pitching staff allowed just six hits as they struck out 14 Bison in the doubleheader. Gallaudet (5-14-1, 0-5 CAC) still remains winless in conference play.

Junior Stacy Davis improved to 12-3 on the year as she earned the win in game one as she allowed one run, struck out four in 2 and 2/3 innings. Senior Kortni Pedlow (6-1) threw three innings in game two to pick up her sixth win of the season. She gave up just two hits and struck out six Bison. Freshman Kim Ruppert closed out both games as she surrendered three hits, struck out four over 4 and 1/3 innings.

Gallaudet was led offensively by senior Lori Hower who went 2-for-3 on the day.

The maroon and gold will try to extend their nine-game winning streak on Sunday, April 6, as they head on the road to Fredericksburg, Va., to face Capital Athletic Conference opponent University of Mary Washington for a doubleheader.
