STARKVILLE, Miss. - The
Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced
its 2008 Division III All-Region teams and five Salisbury
University softball stars were honored in the Atlantic Region.
Sophomore shortstop Kelly Waskewicz (Olney Md./St.
John's College) and junior Stacey Malarkey
(Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) made repeat appearances on the
first team as SU was one of only four teams from the region that
placed two players on the first team. The other teams were
Bridgewater (Va.) College, Louisiana College and Shenandoah
University as there are over 50 teams in the Atlantic Region.
Waskewicz, a 2007 All-American and Atlantic Region first team
selection, was the lone shortstop on the first team. She led the
maroon and gold in several offensive categories this season
including batting average (.481), hits (64), home runs (17) and
stolen bases (16). She also earned her second straight Capital
Athletic Conference Player of the Year award in '08 along with
another appearance on the all-conference first team.
Malarkey was awarded an at-large position on the first team as she
led SU in doubles (15) and was third in both runs (36) and hits
(36). She is also a three-time all-conference first team selection
for the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury had two players on the 2008 Atlantic Region second
team in sophomore Lauren Brenneman (York,
Pa./Central York) and freshman Kristin Lord
(Denton, Md./North Caroline), who received at-large spots.
Brenneman, a two-time All-CAC first team member, was the
starting catcher for Salisbury. She led the team in RBI (47) and
triples (four) while she was second on the team in batting average
(.419). Lord batted .390 in 34 games for the maroon and gold and
finished second on the team in steals (10) and fourth in runs
scored (28).
Junior pitcher Stacy Davis (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) rounded out the all-region honorees for Salisbury
as she was named to the third team as an at-large selection. Davis,
an All-CAC first team member, was the ace for SU this season as she
posted an 18-3 record and a stellar 1.14 ERA in 123 innings. Davis
struck out 87 batters and held her opponents to a collective .215
batting average.
Salisbury finished its season with an impressive 32-7 mark and
won the Capital Athletic Conference championship for the 13th time
in 14 years. The future looks bright for the maroon and gold as all
five of the honored Sea Gulls are slated to return for the 2009
campaign.
