YORK, Pa. - Sophomore shortstop Kelly
Waskewicz (Olney, Md./St. John's College) became the
fourth player in Capital Athletic Conference history to be named
conference Player of the Year twice in her career. SU head
coach Margie Knight won her seventh CAC Coach of
the Year award as the Sea Gulls placed six players on the 2008 CAC
Softball All-Star team.
Waskewicz, the 2007 Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year,
was one of six members of the 2008 CAC champion Sea Gulls to earn a
berth on this year's all-star squad. She leads her Gulls in six
offensive categories with a .468 batting average, 59 hits, three
triples, 16 homeruns, 40 RBI and 125 total bases.
The shortstop is the first Sea Gull to earn back-to-back player
of the year awards since Lacey Lister earned the award in the three
straight seasons from 2004-06. An SU player has been awarded a CAC
Player of the Year award in 13 of its 14 seasons as members of the
conference, with 11 consecutive honorees. Myra Parks started the
streak for SU in 1997.
SU teammates catcher Lauren Brenneman
(York, Pa./Central York), first baseman Ali
Ritter (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere), second
baseman Stacey Malarkey (Taneytown,
Md./Francis Scott Key) and outfielder Jen
Cahall (Elkton, Md./Elkton) all returned to this year's
all-star squad from the 2007 All-CAC team. This is the third
straight year Malarkey has been named to the All-CAC first team.
The four Sea Gull standouts have combined for 123 hits and 104
RBI. Brenneman, returning to the All-CAC lineup but for her first
time with the Gulls, leads the quartet of returners with eight home
runs and a slugging percentage of .825.
SU junior pitcher Stacy Davis (Westminster,
Md./Westminster) also earned a first-team nod this season as the
team's go-to pitcher. Davis, a first team All-CAC selection last
season, has recorded a 17-3 record with a 1.20 ERA in 117
innings pitched. She has recorded 85 strikeouts on the year and is
holding her opponents to a .215 batting average. From the other
side of the plate Davis is batting .340 with three home runs and 18
RBI.
Coach Knight, who has led the Gulls (30-7) to their 12th
straight CAC title and 13th in conference history, previously won
the CAC Coach of the Year award in 1997, '98, 2000, '03, '04 and
'05.
