The award is given to players who best exemplify the attributes of sportsmanship and selfless dedication to the team.

The award was created in McFarlin's memory by her tennis playing friends in the communities of Easton, Salisbury and Baltimore. A lifelong contributor to the game of tennis, McFarlin served as women's head coach at Salisbury from 1985-88. The award was first presented in the Spring of 2000.
