LOS ANGELES – The Salisbury University men's tennis team earned a tough fought 5-4 victory over Occidental College on Sunday evening in the team's first match of its spring break trip.
The Sea Gulls (8-2) picked up one point in the doubles matches as sophomores Ian Siew and Matthew Ryan picked up the lone victory. Playing in the No. 2 doubles spot, Siew and Ryan posted an 8-3 win to get Salisbury on the board.
The Tigers (2-5) managed to claim victories in both the No. 1 doubles match by the final score of 8-2 and in the No. 3 doubles match defeating juniors Kelson Weber and Stefan Hein in extra sets 9-8 (7-5).
However, the maroon and gold would rally back in the single matches, claiming four victories in the six matches played to earn the match win. Siew, who was playing the No. 2 spot, posted a 6-0, 6-3 win while Hein, who was in the No. 3 spot, battled back to earn a three-set victory 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Weber and Ryan continued their successful evenings picking up wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Weber came back to win in three sets 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 while Ryan won in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Salisbury returns to action on Monday, March 19 when it takes on Sewanee: The University of the South in Malibu, California. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Pacific time.
