YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team earned a pair of Capital Athletic Conference victories on Saturday, winning at York College of Pennsylvania and at Penn State University-Harrisburg.
Salisbury 8, York 1
In the first match of the day, Salisbury opened up to a 2-1 lead through doubles play. Junior Michael Popielski and freshman Andrew Rainger collected an 8-1 win at No. 3, while seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther won 8-3 at No. 1 for Salisbury's second doubles point.
The Sea Gulls got through singles play, sweeping the six matches with straight-set wins. Spangler, at No. 1, gave up just one game with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Weber won at No. 5 and Popielski won at No. 6, with each surrendering two games. Weber was a 6-0, 6-2 winner and Popielski was a 6-1, 6-1 winner.
Gunther came up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, Hudson won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Rainger grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at No. 6.
Salisbury 8, Penn State-Harrisburg 1
In the second match of the day, Salisbury (8-6, 3-1 CAC) won all three doubles matches, with Hudson and Weber winning 8-0, at No. 2, while the teams of Spangler and Gunther, and Rainger and Popielski both won 8-0.
Spangler led the way in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 while Rainger was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4.
Weber, at No. 3, picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win and sophomore Connor Truitt prevailed 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
Salisbury closed out its scoring with a 7-5, 6-1 win from Gunther at No. 2, as junior Bobby Leverich fell 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 at No. 6.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Wednesday, April 6 traveling to Christopher Newport University for another CAC match. Wednesday's contest is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
