Sea Gulls claim 6-3 win against Wheaton

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team earned a 6-3 win on Monday afternoon against Wheaton (Mass.) College.

Salisbury opened with a sweep of the doubles matches in impressive fashion for a 3-0 advantage. Salisbury's top pair of seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther picked up an 8-1 win, while the Sea Gulls (6-3) took wins of 8-2 at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Junior Grant Hudson and sophomore Kelson Weber picked up the win at No. 2 while junior Michael Popielski and freshman Andrew Rainger was good for the win at No. 3.

Spangler also rolled to a win at No. 1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. Popielski battled to a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 and the Sea Gulls' final point came from Rainger at No. 6. Rainger claimed the first set 6-1, before dropping the second 6-4. But in the third set, he closed out the match with a 6-0 win.

The Lyons (1-1) earned three wins, but not without a fight from the Gulls. Weber dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 4, while Gunther fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Hudson was defeated 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.

The Sea Gulls will be off for a day, before returning to the courts on Wednesday, March 16 against Sewanee in a match scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., eastern time.
