SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team took its fifth win of the season getting past Stevenson University at the SU Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon, earning a 9-0 victory.
In doubles, the Sea Gulls claimed all three points to start the matches off. At No. 1, seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther pulled away after starting on serve at 3-2, to never give a game up after that, winning 8-2. At No. 2, junior Grant Hudson and sophomore Kelson Weber picked up an 8-1 win, while the No. 3 pair of junior Michael Popielski and sophomore Connor Truitt won 8-1, as well.
The Sea Gulls grabbed the last six points in singles. First off the court at No. 3, Hudson earned a 6-0, 6-0 win followed quickly by Popielski, with another impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Weber was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 and Spangler earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1.Truitt picked up a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 win as he led narrowly in the second set 3-2, until he went up 5-2, finally taking the match at 6-3.
Gunther had a tough first set at No. 2 singles. He and Stevenson's Troy Derrick were on serve for the entire set until Gunther broke serve to earn the 6-4 first set. In the second set, Gunther was determined and finished with a 6-0 score to earn the ninth point and victory for the Sea Gulls.
The Sea Gulls kick off their spring break trip in Claremont, California on Sunday, March 13 taking on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
