SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team opened up the 2016 season on Friday afternoon, topping Juniata College, 6-3, at the SU Tennis Courts.
The Sea Gulls (1-0) claimed the first two doubles matches that wrapped up with seniors Eric Spangler and Shanon Gunther getting the 8-1 win at No. 1, followed by junior Grant Hudson and sophomore Kelson Weber collecting an 8-4 win at No. 2.
Junior Michael Popielski and freshman Andrew Rainger grabbed an early lead at No. 3 doubles, but Bryan Gregory and Owen Grafe were able to come back for a 9-8 (7-3) win for the first point for the Eagles (0-1).
The Salisbury lead quickly grew to 4-1 with wins at No. 1 singles by Spangler and No. 2 singles by Gunther. Spangler was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 score while Gunther came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The Eagles cut the deficit to two points with a win by Dan Ansel at No. 5 over Rainger, 6-0, 6-4, but Popielski closed out the win for Salisbury with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles.
Hudson won a thrilling three-set victory 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-5 for the Sea Gulls' final point while Weber fell in a three-set match at No. 4 singles, 5-6, 7-5, 12-10.
Salisbury will look for its second win of the season on Sunday, February 21, hosting Bridgewater (Va.) University at the SU Tennis Courts. That match is slated to start at noon.
