Gulls down Occidental, 8-1, for first win of California trip

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Monday night, taking down Occidental College in the team's second match of its spring break trip, 8-1.

The Sea Gulls swept the doubles matches to open the contest, with senior Daniel Albers and junior Eric Spangler collecting the most lopsided contest in doubles play, winning 8-2 at No. 1.

Senior Demetri Vrahnos and junior Shanon Gunther collected an 8-4 win at No. 2, while senior Adam Goldberger and freshman Sean Ngo took a 9-8 win at No. 3, winning the tie breaker, 7-2.

In singles play, Spangler remained perfect in eight matches at No. 2, with a 6-1, 6-1 win. The Sea Gulls (7-1) also got a straight-set win from Gunther, who won the opening set 6-2 before needing a 7-3 tie-breaker win to take the second.

Ngo was forced to work for his straight-set win at No. 5, picking up the first set 6-4 and going to 7-5 to grab the second while Goldberger won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.

Vrahnos needed three sets to earn the win at No. 3, falling in the opening set, 6-2, before winning the second 6-4 and taking the third set match tie-breaker, 11-9.

The Tigers (3-5) took their only point at No. 1, where Josh Dancu defeated Albers in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 10-1.

After a day off on Tuesday, the Sea Gulls will be back in action on Wednesday, March 18, taking on The University of the South in Claremont, California beginning at noon, eastern time.
