YORK, Pa. – Salisbury University sophomore Shanon Gunther was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
Gunther helped the Sea Gulls to a strong showing at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Mary Washington, as Gunther won one flight and advanced to the championship round in another.
Gunther teamed with his brother, senior Shane Gunther, in the first double flight and the pair claimed the title. The Gunthers won their first match, 8-1, before needing more narrow scores of 9-8 and 8-5 to advance to the championship match. The Salisbury duo came away from the title match against Juniata College's Bryan Gregory and Justin Wisniewski with a 9-8 win.
In the singles sixth flight, Shanon Gunther earned a pair of three-set victories in the first two rounds, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 and 6-1, 4-6, 10-7 to get to the semifinals. After a 6-4, 6-1 win, Gunther fell in the championship match, 6-3, 6-3 to Hampden-Sydney College's David Dodson.
The ITA Regional was Salisbury's only fall event. The team will begin the 2014 season on Feb. 7, hosting the Sea Gull Open at the Salisbury University Indoor Tennis Center.
