LONGVIEW, Texas – The Salisbury University men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at LeTourneau University on Wednesday afternoon as part of its spring break trip to Texas.
The Sea Gulls (4-6) picked up a point in doubles play as sophomore Daniel Albers and freshman Eric Spangler topped the LeTourneau duo of Carlos Cantu and Laird Beaty 8-6. The win was the fifth straight for the pair of Albers and Spangler.
The YellowJackets, the No. 16-ranked team in the West Region, won the other two doubles matches. Senior Adam Goldberger and junior Demetri Vrahnos fell at No. 2, by an 8-5 score while junior Shane Gunther and sophomore Nick Mancuso fell 8-3, at No. 3.
Vrahnos collected Salisbury's only singles win, topping Kendall Beggs at No. 3 by matching scores of 6-4, 6-4. Vrahnos improved to 8-2 this season, the best singles mark of any Sea Gull.
None of the Sea Gulls went easily, though the YellowJackets earned straight-sets wins in the other five singles matches. Spangler dropped the No. 2 singles match, 7-6, 7-6 while Gunther, at No. 6, dropped his first set 6-2 before battling to a 7-6 loss in the second.
Albers lost at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3 while Goldberger suffered a 6-1, 6-3 setback at No. 4 and Mancuso lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
Salisbury will conclude its four-match Texas trip on Thursday, battling Centenary (La.) College in a neutral-site match, beginning at 11 a.m., eastern time.
