SALISBURY, Md. -- The Salisbury University men's tennis team won its second straight match with an 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over York College of Pennsylvania at the SU Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
Salisbury's victory was highlighted by junior Demetri Vrahnos' 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, who improved his record to 6-1 this season and senior Adam Goldberger's exciting three-set triumph 6-1, 6-7 (2), 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Daniel Albers also put in a strong effort, defeating the Spartans' Tyler Cheatham in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The Sea Gulls (3-4, 1-1 CAC) began the day with three wins in doubles action. The No. 2 duo of Vrahnos and Goldberger secured the Gulls' first point of the day, dispatching Matt Rosenkrantz and Jake Greenstein, 8-1.
The Sea Gulls' No. 1 pair of Albers and freshman Eric Spangler locked up their second straight victory, 8-2, over Cheatham and Nathaniel Hoskins while sophomore Nick Mancuso and junior Shane Gunther rolled again at No. 3, with an 8-2 win over Mario Herrera and George Sosa.
The maroon and gold also received solid performances from Mancuso and freshman Aaron Heffley. Mancuso downed Rosenkrantz 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4, and Heffley defeated Daniel Erk at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-3.
The Spartans (8-4, 0-1 CAC) got on the board for their only point of the match at No. 5 singles as Greenstein outlasted Gunther 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the third set super tie-breaker.
Salisbury will be back in action next week as they travel to Texas to take on the University of Texas at Dallas, on Monday, March 18. The non-conference match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
