Sea Gulls roll to 9-0 win over Hampden-Sydney in 2013 season opener

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team opened its 2013 season with a convincing 9-0 victory over Hampden-Sydney College in a neutral-site match, played at the University of Mary Washington, on Saturday night.

Salisbury swept the three doubles matches, with sophomore Daniel Albers and freshman Eric Spangler picking up an 8-2 win at No. 1 while junior Shane Gunther and freshman Aaron Heffley won by the same score at No. 3. Senior Adam Goldberger and junior Demetri Vrahnos picked up the third doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Spangler earned the most decisive singles victory, picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 while Gunther earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

Albers claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Vrahnos won at No. 3 (7-5, 6-3), Goldberger won at No. 4 (7-6 (7-2), 6-1) and Heffley won at No. 6 (6-1, 7-5).

The Sea Gulls will play two matches on Sunday, taking on No. 21 Mary Washington at 11 a.m., and playing Bridgewater (Va.) College at 4 p.m.
