EWING, N.J. – The Salisbury University tennis teams both suffered losses at The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. The men fell 7-2, while the women took a 9-0 loss.
Senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers kept their hot streak going at No. 1 doubles. The pair collected an 8-4 win to increase their winning streak to 11 matches. The pair has combined for a 14-2 record this season for Salisbury (8-9).
The Lions (7-3) picked up the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Albers earned Salisbury's lone singles win, earning a three-set victory at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Demetri Vrahnos won the first set at No. 6 singles, 6-1, before being edged in the second set, 7-5, by Gabe Allen. Allen won the third-set super tie-breaker, 10-6, to claim the match.
Barnas also battled to a narrow loss at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), to T.J. Riley.
The women (9-8) dropped the three doubles matches, narrowly falling in the top two spots as junior Jillian Poppe and freshman Roxanne Alban dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 1 and junior Elaina Iosue and freshman Katie Youlios fell 8-5 at No. 2.
TCNJ (14-1) swept the six singles matches with Poppe playing the closest match, a 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-2, loss at No. 1 singles. Iosue took three games in each set, falling at No. 2 while Youlios nearly earned a first-set win, coming away on the short end of a 7-5, 6-0 match at No. 4.
The Salisbury squads will be back in action on Sunday, April 15, as they travel to Elizabethtown College to take on the Blue Jays. The matches are scheduled to begin at noon.
