Men's tennis suffers first home loss of 2012 to No. 30 CNU

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the 2012 season, falling to No. 30 Christopher Newport University, 8-1, at the SU Tennis Courts.

After CNU claimed the No. 2 doubles match with an 8-3 win, Salisbury's top pair of senior Daniel Barnas and freshman Daniel Albers battled from behind for an 8-5 victory.

The duo trailed CNU's top team of Matt King and Eric Shulman, the No. 3 ranked doubles pair in the Atlantic South Region, 4-3. But Salisbury was able to charge back, breaking serve before Albers held serve to go up 5-4. Barnas and Albers broke Shulman's serve to extend their lead with the deciding point coming on an outstanding drop shot by Barnas.

CNU's pair of Joey Manilla and Will Sloan were able to hold off a late charge by senior Justin Smith and junior Adam Goldberger for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, giving the Captains (5-7) a 2-1 edge heading into the singles matches.

Salisbury (3-6) stood strong in singles play, but could not earn a point. In two of the closest matches, Goldberger fell to Wagner, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 and Albers went three sets and a tie-breaker with Matt King, who is ranked No. 14 in the Atlantic South Region, before falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 (7-5).

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Saturday, March 31, when they travel to No. 25 University of Mary Washington. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
