Sea Gulls fly to West Coast; men earn 5-4 victory against Willamette

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams kicked off their Spring Break in a different time zone, traveling to the Golden State to play several matches over the span of several days. Both teams played their first matches of the trip on Monday afternoon, with the men's team earning a 5-4 victory and the women suffering a 7-2 loss.

The men's team's (5-2, 2-0 Capital Athletic Conference) match, against Willamette University, was tightly contested, but a sweep of the doubles competition and solid performances at No. 4 and No. 5 singles by senior Giorgio Athans and sophomore Henry Stuhler earned the Sea Gulls the narrow victory. Senior Andrew Nottage nearly earned the win at No. 1 singles, taking the match to three sets; junior Justin Smith's No. 6 singles match also went to three sets.

The women (3-1, 2-0 CAC), who faced Whitman College on Monday, also saw three of their singles matches go to three sets. A 6-2, 6-2 victory by senior Angela Tenaglia in the No. 3 singles spot and a narrow 9-8 (7-1) win by freshman Jessica Babyak and sophomore Rachel Lupinetti in the No. 3 doubles match were Salisbury's two individual match wins of the day.

Both the men and women are scheduled to square off against Pacific (Ore.) University this morning at noon, EST (9 a.m. pacific).
