Women's tennis improves to 3-0; Men fall to No. 10 Amherst in California
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Salisbury University tennis teams began their California trip with matches played at Claremont- Mudd-Scripps Monday afternoon. The women took down Claremont-M-S, 6-3, while the No. 30 men, fell to No. 10 Amherst College, 7-2.
The Salisbury women (3-0, 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference) remained perfect on the young season. Sea Gull freshmen Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md.) and Jillian Poppe (Califon, N.J.) won both their singles and doubles matches on Monday to improve their records to 6-0, having played in every match.
Poppe teamed with senior Jackie Burr (Dover, Del.) to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Iosue and junior Angela Tenaglia (Clarksville, Md.) won at No. 3 doubles, 9-7. Salisbury earned the No. 2 doubles match when senior Kelly Fahrner (Germantown, Md.) and senior Rachel Iosue (Damascus, Md.) claimed an 8-5 victory.
The Sea Gulls got straight-set wins from Rachel Iosue at No. 2 singles (6-3, 7-6 (8-6)) and Poppe at No. 4 (6-4, 6-3). Elaina Iosue needed three sets to claim the victory at No. 6 singles (6-3, 4-6, 6-1).
The men (3-2, 1-0 CAC) got just one win in doubles, an 8-2 victory from the team of junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) and senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.). The pair continued their strong start to the 2010 season, having won all five matches they have played together.
Salisbury’s other win on the day came at No. 3 singles where senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) came back from a set down to pick up a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory. It marked the third time this season Thomas has played at No. 3 singles, winning all three times.
The Sea Gull teams will continue their California swing on Tuesday. The women will take on Colorado College and the men will face Bowdoin College. Both matches will be played in Claremont, Calif.
