Men's tennis gains valuable match experience at Sea Gull Invite
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team got its first taste of NCAA action this weekend, as it hosted The College of New Jersey in the Sea Gull Invite. The round robin-style invitational tournament, held at the indoor tennis center on Saturday and Sunday, matched players of similar skill levels against one another.
In singles action, senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) accumulated three wins over the weekend. Senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) and junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) each had two singles wins. Burtzlaff, Thomas and Lupinetti each went perfect in singles play, while Thomas did not drop a set.
Senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) and junior Giorgio Athans (Whoolwich Township, N.J.) each had good wins over their respective opponents. Sophomore Kyle Schneck (Annapolis, Md.) collected a win and freshman Henry Stuhler (Bay Head, N.J.) had two wins in the event.
In the doubles competition, the SU duo of Burtzlaff/Thomas, ranked third in Atlantic South Region, accumulated two wins over the weekend. The team of Lupinetti/Robinson also earned a pair of wins, while not dropping a match.
Lupinetti was perfect on the weekend, going 4-0 in his four times on the court.
The College of New Jersey's doubles team of Dean Thompson and Jonathan Yu is ranked No. 10 in the Northeast Region, but the pair played no doubles matches together this weekend.
The maroon and gold are set to square off against N.C. Wesleyan in the 2010 home-opening match on March 5. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
