Sea Gull Open continues, only SU players remain
Salisbury, Md. - The 13th annual Sea Gull Open continued Saturday, and only SU players were able to advance to the semifinals in the event, featuring men's singles and doubles draws.
SU assistant coach and first seed Brendan Kincaid defeated junior Giorgio Athans (Woolwich Township, N.J.) 6-3, 6-3. Kincaid would go on to take his quarterfinal match as well, with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Fourth-seeded senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) won his first match of the day easily, 6-0, 6-1. Thomas was then upset by junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) in a three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.), who was seeded No. 3 in the field, was forced to retire in his match against teammate Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) due to injury. Robinson then fell in the quarterfinals to junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) 6-2, 7-5. Senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) won his first match easily, 6-1, 6-1. Burtzlaff then needed three sets to put away Christopher Chiu, the No. 2 seed; he claimed the 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory to advance to the semifinals.
Also held on Saturday were the first two rounds of the men's doubles draw. The team of Kincaid and SU head coach Randy Halfpap received a first-round bye, then defeated the SU team of Lupinetti and Robinson in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded team of Burtzlaff and Thomas had a first-round bye as well, then swept their quarterfinals opponents 6-0; 6-0.
The tournament's semifinal singles matches will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, and will feature Kincaid versus Lupinetti and Nottage versus Burtzlaff. The semifinal doubles matches will feature first-seeded Andrew Carlson/James Peterson versus Halfpap/Kincaid and Chiu/Jonathan Murchison versus second-seeded Burtzlaff/Thomas.
The tournament will conclude Sunday, having a singles and doubles championship later in the day.
