Kincaid named Sea Gull Open champion for second time
SALISBURY, Md. - Action continued Sunday, as the 13th Annual Sea Gull Open was scheduled to come to a close. Brendan Kincaid, a former player and current assistant coach, was named the singles champion, however the finals doubles match has been postponed until the weekend of Feb. 27.
Senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.) swept junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) in the first semifinal singles match 6-0, 6-0. Kincaid defeated junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) in the other semifinal match 6-3, 6-3. Kincaid, the tournament's top seed, and Burtzlaff squared off in the final singles match to determine the Sea Gull Open champion. Kincaid won the first set 6-3, and did not relinquish control as he took the second set 6-4. This is the second consecutive year Kincaid has come away with the Sea Gull Open championship.
In doubles semifinal action, the top-seeded team of Andrew Carlson/James Peterson defeated Salisbury head coach Randy Halfpap and Kincaid in straight sets, though it needed a tie breaker in the second set, 6-4, 7-6 (6). The SU duo of Burtzlaff and senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) defeated Christopher Chiu and Jonathan Murchison in the other semifinal match. The teams split sets and forced a third set, which went to a tie breaker, which Burtzlaff and Thomas eventually won 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4).
The Sea Gull Open was open to all United States Tennis Association (USTA) members including current Sea Gulls and SU Alumni.
Salisbury will be back in action next weekend as it will host the Sea Gull Invitational on February 20-21 at the Indoor Tennis Center.
