Seven advance in first round of 13th Annual Sea Gull Open

SALISBURY, Md. - Though it is not an official NCAA event, the Salisbury University men’s tennis team was able to get the 2010 season underway Friday evening at the SU Tennis Barn, opening up the 13th Annual Sea Gull Open.

The three-day event, got underway with men’s singles action Friday night with 10 Sea Gulls hitting the courts. Seven Salisbury players advanced through Friday’s first round, and all of them did so in straight sets. None were more impressive than the 6-0, 6-0 victory by senior Scott Burtzlaff (Clarksville, Md.).

Junior David Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md.) had one of the tougher battles of the day earning an opening round win, 6-2, 7-5. Giorgio Athans (Woolwich Township, N.J.) advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, junior Andrew Nottage (Huntingtown, Md.) moved on with a 6-2, 6-1 win, senior Marcus Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) claimed a 6-1, 6-0 match, sophomore Kyle Schneck (Annapolis, Md.) moved on with a 7-5, 6-0 win and freshman Henry Stuhler (Bay Head, N.J.) took down teammate sophomore Justin Smith (New Windsor, Md.), 6-1, 6-3.

Assistant Salisbury coach Steve Soliday earned a 6-0, 6-0 win on Friday as well, while sophomore Arthur Jackson (Ridgely, Md.), and junior Matt Copeland (Lexington Park, Md.) each fell in first round action.

The top seed in the tournament is former Salisbury player and current assistant coach Brendan Kincaid. He will be in action today following a first-round bye, as will sophomore Daniel Barnas (La Plata, Md.) and senior Evan Thomas (Salisbury, Md.) the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively.

The tournament will continue Saturday with the men’s second round and quarterfinal action, as well as doubles and women’s play.
