SKILLMAN, N.J. - Salisbury University men's
tennis player Evan Thomas became the first Sea
Gull to be named an All-Academic Scholar-Athlete by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the governing body of
collegiate tennis, since 2001.
Thomas, a rising junior for the No. 23 Sea Gulls, completed the
2008 season with a 16-5 singles record where he went 10-3 at No. 4
singles. Thomas also posted an 18-3 doubles record last season.
This week the Salisbury, Md., native participated in the
Purnell-Thomas Memorial Tennis Tournament on SU's campus.
The ITA has awarded All-Academic Team and Scholar-Athlete awards
since 2001 according to the ITA Web site, about the history of
the awards. Thomas is the first individual to earn this award for
the maroon and gold. Salisbury's women's team was recognized as a
team in 2004.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet
the following criteria: be a varsity letter winner, have a grade
point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current
academic year, and be enrolled at their present school for at least
two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that
has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a
4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on
the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or
more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current
academic year (including fall 2007 and spring 2008).
