SU defeats winless Wesley, 6-3
DOVER, Del. - The No. 29 Salisbury University men's tennis program picked up a second win on Friday afternoon as the Sea Gulls sent an abbreviated team up Rt. 13 to face Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College. The six-team SU squad came away with a 6-3 conference win over the winless Wolverines (0-8, 0-6 CAC).
Salisbury (13-6, 5-1 CAC) locked up the second-seed in next week's CAC tournament with the victory. The Sea Gulls also receive a first round bye.
The maroon and gold picked up wins at first, second, third, and fifth singles. Sophomore Giorgio Athans lead the Sea Gulls with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mickey DeSouza of Wesley at first singles. At No. 2 and No. 3 singles freshmen Curtis Quandt and Justin Smith defeated Chris Maximo and Ryan Fish 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively. Salisbury's last singles win came from Michael Rubin at No. 5 singles as he defeated Jon Hall 6-3, 6-4. Wesley picked up two points by default in No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Wesley's Andrew Smyth also beat sophomore Matt Copeland at fourth singles 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, Athans and Quandt defeated DeSouza and Maximo 8-3 at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Salisbury notched a victory as Copeland and Smith defeated Smyth and Fish 8-3.
The Sea Gulls will next host a CAC semifinal match on Monday, April 20. The opponent and time have not been determined.
