Salisbury picks up regional win over Sewanee during Spring Break
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Salisbury University men's tennis team pinned a 7-2 decision over Sewanee-The University of the South on Tuesday at the Pomona College South Courts in Claremont, Calif. The match marked the second for Salisbury who is in the midst of its Spring Break trip.
The match featured two top teams from the Atlantic South region in Salisbury, ranked seventh in region, and Sewanee, ranked 10th. New national and regional rankings were released on Tuesday and the Sea Gulls dropped out of the national poll. Salisbury was ranked 22nd in the country.
Salisbury (3-3) swept the double portion over Sewanee (5-5) and entered the singles matches up 3-0. Junior Marcus Robinson and sophomore David Lupinetti picked up the first victory of the day for SU as the tandem posted an 8-2 victory over Philip Kuntz and Jeff Lepley at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Andrew Nottage and freshman Daniel Barnas defeated Jay Hill and Will Holloway, 8-6. The Sea Gulls finalized the doubles sweep when juniors Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas won a tie-breaker, 7-4, to defeat Charlie Boyd and Henry Litchfield, 9-8.
In singles action, the Sea Gulls won four matches over the Tigers. Senior Sasha Felikson won the first singles match for SU as he put away Holloway, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in No. 6 singles. Salisbury clinched the match with its fifth victory of the day when Nottage defeated Lepley at No. 5 singles 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. After Burtzlaff was defeated at No. 1 singles by Boyd in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-4, Thomas won a hard fought match over Hill 6-4, 4-6, 14-12. At No. 4 singles, Barnas fell behind 3-6 to Kuntz and was forced to retire in the second set which gave the Tigers their second point of the day. The final SU victory was claimed by Lupinetti who won in consecutive sets 7-5, 6-1 over Litchfield.
Salisbury will continue its action in California on Wednesday, March 18, with a match against Pomona-Pitzer College at 2 p.m.
