Barnas, Burtzlaff-Thomas reach finals in 12th Annual Sea Gull Open
SALISBURY, Md. - Former Salisbury University men's tennis All-American Brendan Kincaid won the 12th annual Sea Gull Open on Sunday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center. Kincaid, a current assistant coach for the Sea Gulls, beat out the field of 28 during the three-day tournament to claim the title.
Third-seed Kincaid defeated SU freshman Daniel Barnas in a heated 6-4, 6-4 final on Sunday. Kincaid reached the final after he defeated second-seed Christopher Chiu in three sets 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5 in the semifinals on Sunday morning. Kincaid's other wins came against current Sea Gull Andrew Nottage 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Benjamin Nottage 6-2, 6-1. Barnas reached the final after he took down junior teammate Evan Thomas 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. On Saturday, Barnas gutted out a three-set victory over former Sea Gull Matthew Nicholson, the fourth-seed, as he lost the first 3-6 and bounced back with two 6-4 set wins. Barnas recorded two other wins in earlier action as he defeated Keith Gonzalez and sophomore David Lupinetti in three sets. Thomas took down top-seed Landon Schaefer in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-1. Six of the eight quarterfinalists in the singles draw were current or former Sea Gulls.
The doubles tournament was won by second-seed Andrew Carlson and James Peterson who defeated Salisbury's junior duos Scott Burtzlaff and Thomas with a 6-4, 6-2 win. Burtzlaff and Thomas, the fourth-seed doubles team in the tournament, will be the Sea Gulls' No. 1 doubles team this season. Burtzlaff also advanced to the singles quarterfinals. Burtzlaff and Thomas advanced to the doubles finals after they defeated top-seed Thomas DeAngelis and Chiu 6-2, 6-3. The top four seeds in the doubles tournament advanced to the semifinals. The third-seed doubles team featured SU coach Randy Halfpap and Kincaid who won two matches before they lost to Carlson-Peterson in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-2. The SU duo of Sasha Felikson and Giorgio Athans defeated Benjamin Nottage and Ted Cooke 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16. Athans-Felikson later fell to the team of Chiu-DeAngelis, 6-2, 6-3.
The Sea Gull Open was open to all United States Tennis Association (USTA) members including current Sea Gulls and SU Alumni. The women's singles draw was canceled.
Salisbury will be back in action next weekend as it will host the Sea Gull Invitational on February 21-22 at the Indoor Tennis Center.
