Salisbury impressive in Sea Gull Invitational
SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 23 Salisbury University men's tennis team completed a successful weekend at the Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday as the Sea Gulls welcomed No. 17 The College of New Jersey and Averett University to campus. The three teams competed in the two-day Sea Gull Invitational that featured flighted singles and doubles competition.
The Sea Gulls won 12 of their matches against Averett as SU swept the six doubles events and posted a 6-3 total in singles competition. Salisbury followed suit as it won eight of their 12 matches against TCNJ, who is also ranked No. 7 in the Northeast Region, including a 3-2 mark in doubles action and 5-2 in singles. Last season, SU lost 7-2 to TCNJ in a regular-season match on the road. Averett went 6-1 against TCNJ in singles play as the two teams split in doubles action, 2-2.
SU sophomore David Lupinetti led the maroon and gold as he went a perfect 5-0 for the weekend. Junior Marcus Robinson, Lupinetti's doubles partner, went 3-0 in doubles action and posted a 1-1 mark in singles competition to go 4-1 for the weekend. Salisbury's top two players, juniors Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas, went 2-0 in doubles play and both split 1-1 in singles. Freshman newcomer Daniel Barnas impressed in singles with a 2-0 record and posted a 2-1 doubles mark with teammate sophomore Andrew Nottage, who also went 2-0 in singles play. Senior Sasha Felikson and sophomore Giorgio Athans were 2-1 as doubles partners and Athans added one singles win on Saturday. The other singles victory was posted by freshman Curtis Quandt against Averett. Quandt and fellow freshman Justin Smith lost in doubles play against Averett. Sophomores Matt Copeland and Michael Rubin were paired together on Sunday against Averett in the fourth round of doubles and lost 8-2.
Salisbury will head to Lexington, Va., next weekend to face No. 19 Washington & Lee University on Saturday, February 28. The Sea Gulls then will go up against Hampden-Sydney College, another Old Dominion Athletic Conference team, in a neutral site match the next day.
