Burtzlaff-Thomas lose tough match in NCAA Doubles Championship
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Salisbury University juniors Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas gave the nation's top-ranked team Washington University in St. Louis all it could handle in the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship but in the end the duo of Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland were victorious.
Cutler-Hoeland, ranked No. 3 in the Central Region for doubles, won the first set against Burtzlaff-Thomas, ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic South Region for doubles, with a 6-2 win. The Salisbury pair battled back in the second set and won 7-5. The third and final set went to the Washington pair 6-4 in the round of 16 on Friday evening.
Burtzlaff and Thomas finish the year with an impressive 13-6 record in doubles. This was the second straight year for Burtzlaff in the NCAA doubles championships. Last year, Burtzlaff and former Sea Gull Brendan Kincaid lost in the same round to the top pair from Middlebury College.
Salisbury's men's team finished the year with a 14-7 record and are currently ranked No. 30 in the nation and seventh in the region.
