No. 11 Bowdoin trips up No. 22 Salisbury in California
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 22 Salisbury University men's tennis team lost to No. 11 Bowdoin College 8-1 on Monday in Claremont, Calif., as the Sea Gulls (2-3) began their Spring Break matches.
The Gulls were swept by the Polar Bears (3-2) in doubles action to begin the match down 3-0. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas were defeated by Oscar Pena and Alex White 8-5. At second doubles Daniel Barnas and Andrew Nottage fell to Jamie Neely and Stephen Sullivan. David Lupinetti and Marcus Robinson were bested by Tyler Anderson and Josh Cranin 8-3 at third doubles.
In singles action, Burtzlaff fell 6-3, 6-3 to Sullivan, who is ranked No. 17 in the nation at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles Pena beat Thomas 6-0, 6-1. SU recorded its first and only point of the match at No. 3 singles. Lupinetti lost the first set 1-6 before he took the second set 5-4 over Cranin. Cranin then retired to give Lupinetti the win and SU the point. Barnas fell at No. 4 singles 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to White while at No. 5 singles Nottage won the Gull's second set of the match 6-3 over Alex Caughron. The Polar Bear rallied and took the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Bowdoin closed out the scoring at No. 6 singles as Anderson defeated senior Sasha Felikson 6-3, 6-2.
In exhibitions contests following the conclusion of the match the Sea Gulls won two of three. Junior Marcus Robinson went 1-1 defeating Alex Jacobs 6-4 and then fell to Andrew Won 8-5. Sophomore Giorgio Athans bested Michael Power 8-3.
SU will take on Sewanee - University of the South on Tuesday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in Claremont, Calif. This match features two of the top teams in the Atlantic South region as Salisbury is ranked seventh and is Sewanee 10th.
