YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University men's
tennis team earned two of the three Capital Athletic
Conference postseason awards handed out this week. SU coach
Randy Halfpap was selected as the 2008 CAC Coach
of the Year while freshman David Lupinetti was
named the 2008 CAC Rookie of the Year. The Sea Gulls had five
players on the All-CAC first or second team for singles and two of
Salisbury's three doubles teams were named all-conference.
Lupinetti (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) posted a 9-4 record
at fifth singles this season and was 16-4 overall. He is the
fourth Sea Gull to gain CAC Rookie of the Year honors since
2001 and the third in the past four seasons.
Halfpap was named the CAC Coach of the Year, by his peers, for
the third time in his career at SU and the first time since 2004.
His first honor was in his second season at his alma mater in
2001. Halfpap guided the Sea Gulls to a No. 22 national ranking as
the maroon and gold is ranked third in the Atlantic South region.
Salisbury posted a 17-5 record and was the CAC regular-season
champions. The Sea Gulls finished second in the CAC tournament to
University of Mary Washington.
Salisbury senior Brendan Kincaid (Cambridge,
Md./Cambridge-SD) was the lone Sea Gull selected to the All-CAC
first team for singles. This is the second time Kincaid has
been named to the all-conference singles first team. He was named
to the second team last season. Kincaid was named the 2005 CAC
Rookie of the Year his freshman season. Kincaid is the only senior
on the 2008 All-CAC first team.
Juniors Sasha Felikson (Rockville, Md./Wooten)
and Matt Nicholson (Charlotte Hall, Md./LaPlata)
along with sophomores Scott Burtzlaff
(Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and Evan Thomas
(Salisbury, Md./Faith Baptist) were named to the All-CAC second
team for singles play. This is the third straight year Felikson has
earned All-CAC second team honors. Burtzlaff was the CAC Rookie of
the Year and a first team selection for singles last season. This
is the second straight year for Thomas on the all-conference team
as he on the first team in '07.
Kincaid returned to the All-CAC first team for doubles along
with teammate Burtzlaff. Last season, Kincaid and Nicholson were
paired together while Burtzlaff and Thomas earned all-conference
second team honors. Kincaid and Burtzlaff were 12-5 at first
doubles for the Sea Gulls this season and 18-6 overall. Nicholson
and Thomas were named to the All-CAC second team in '08. The duo
posted a 10-3 record at second doubles for the maroon and gold and
was 13-3 overall.
Mary Washington placed its entire starting lineup for singles
and doubles on one of the two respective all-conference teams.
