SALISBURY, Md. - The teams were different but
the outcome was the same. That was the story for the Salisbury
University men's tennis team on Saturday at the SU Tennis Complex
as the Sea Gulls defeated Virginia Wesleyan College and Chowan
University by identical 8-1 outcomes.
Salisbury (2-0) starts its 2007 campaign off on the right foot
with the back-to-back dual match victories. In the first match
against VWC (4-1) the Sea Gulls won every match except for No. 1
singles. Junior Eric Caudill defeated SU sophomore Matthew
Nicholson in his dual match debut, 6-4, 6-1.
The Sea Gulls also received three single wins from freshmen
making their maroon and gold debut. Evan Thomas
and Jason Williams won in straight sets while
fellow freshman Scott Burtzlaff took down VWC's
No. 2 single Jeff Zenisek in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. SU swept
the doubles matches pretty handily. Junior Brendan Kincaid and
Nicholson held down the No. 1 doubles match with an 8-4 victory
over Caudill and Zenisek.
Kincaid made his singles debut against Chowan as the No. 2
single for SU and won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. In doubles,
Kincaid and Nicholson defeated Darick Gilman and Diego Timoteo 8-5.
The lone loss for the Sea Gulls against the Hawks (1-3) came from
the hands of Timoteo in the No. 3 singles match against Burtzlaff,
6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-8.
Salisbury will travel tomorrow to Virginia Beach, Va., to face
Piedmont College (Ga.) at Christopher Newport University.
