Cardinals top Sea Gulls in swimming season opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2018-19 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Catholic University of America. The Cardinals came out on top in both contests, with the men falling 165-89 and the women losing 194.5-58.

Men

Peter Moyer captured the first victory of the day for Salisbury in the 800-meter freestyle event. Moyer's victory came in convincing fashion with a time of 9:10.33, besting the second-place finisher by 15 seconds.

The men then claimed first in the 50-meter freestyle. Josh Brown beat out Catholic's Matthew Mahon with a time of 24.90 seconds for the win.

Richard Baker started a streak of three-straight wins for the men. Baker won the 100-meter backstroke, posting a time of 1:01.16.

Kyle Russell followed Baker with a victory in the 100-meter breaststroke, capturing a time of 1:09.28 to finish a full second ahead of the second-place finisher.

Moyer captured the third straight, and final, victory of the day for the men. Moyer's second first-place finish of the day came in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:28.33.

Women

On the women's side, Autumn Allen was the first swimmer to come out victorious. Allen won the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 38.67 seconds.

Emma Tarnosky also claimed first, with her win coming in the 100-meter backstroke. Tarnosky posted a time of 1:11.46.

The women finished their day with a first-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle relay. The team of Chase McClure, Mary Green, Natalie Eakin, and Jordyn Rowe finished tied for first with Catholic, with both teams posting a time of 4:24.25.

Both the men's and women's teams travel to York College of Pennsylvania for the first Capital Athletic Conference meet of the season next Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.
