Carrington converts overtime penalty kick as men’s soccer defeats Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md.Nick Carrington converted on a penalty kick 2:14 into the first overtime to give the Salisbury University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Frostburg State University on Saturday night in a huge Capital Athletic Conference match.

Salisbury's (7-8-2, 3-3-2 CAC) first chance on goal didn't come until the 14th minute off the foot of Brooks Zentgraf, but Frostburg State (5-10-2, 3-5-0 CAC) goalie Juan Bofill was there to make the save. The best chance of the first half came on a Carrington free kick from midfield in the 30th minute. The free kick found the head of Dolph Hegewisch, but Bofill got a touch on the header before it hit the crossbar and bounced out of bounds.

The Bobcats outshot the Sea Gulls 6-4 in the first half, though the maroon and gold got two shots on goal while Frostburg State accounted for just one. Salisbury held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks at the break.

Frostburg State turned up the offensive pressure in the second half but was unable to find a goal. The Bobcats held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the half and held the Gulls without a shot on goal. Salisbury did hold a 2-1 edge in corner kicks, but was unable to generate any opportunities.

The game would be Salisbury's third straight overtime match. The Sea Gulls wasted little time ending this one, as Quincy Tyler was fouled in the box, giving Salisbury a penalty kick 2:14 into the first overtime period. Carrington was called on to take the penalty kick and converted with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. The penalty kick marks the third such opportunity that Carrington has converted into a score this season, and adds to his team-leading fourth goal.

Trevor Brookhart saved all five shots that came his way for his fourth shutout of the season.

The men's soccer team returns home for its final regular season match of the season on Wednesday, October 25. The match against Wesley College is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. The win over Frostburg State gives Salisbury the sixth and final seed in the CAC playoffs heading into the final match of the season. A win against Wesley would clinch a playoff berth.
