ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Trevor Sharpe, Jimmy Mundy and Pat Callahan each scored second-half goals as the No. 17 Salisbury University men's soccer team defeated St. Mary's (Md.) College, 3-0, Monday to earn the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title and top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The victory for SU (11-2-3, 5-1-0 CAC) extended its unbeaten streak to nine games while locking up a first-round bye in the CAC tournament.
After a scoreless first half, the Sea Gulls broke through on St. Mary's (7-9-0, 3-5-0) goalkeeper Austin Brown in the 54th minute. Sharpe put an Ian Wilson cross from the right flank into an empty net for the sophomore's seventh goal of the season.
SU added to the lead in the 69th minute on a Mundy header off a pass from Cody Webster.
Callahan added his first goal of the season for good measure two minutes later, hitting a free kick off the inside of the right post for the final margin.
Salisbury goalkeeper John Vnenchak (7-2-3) made three saves in posting his team-leading fifth shutout of the season. Brown (7-9-0) made seven stops in the net for the Seahawks.
The Gulls held an edge in shots, 24-12, and corner kicks, 8-4, on the day.
SU closes the regular season at home against Stevenson University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
