SALISBURY, Md. - Freshmen
midfielders Jimmy Mundy (Ellicott City,
Md.) and Pat Callahan (Clarks Summit,
Pa.) each tallied late second-half goals to lead the
Salisbury University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Richard
Stockton College in the final game of the Elmer Lord Memorial
Soccer Classic at the SU Soccer Complex. The win, combined with
yesterday's 4-0 victory over Capital University, gives the
championship of the tournament to the Sea Gulls.
Salisbury completed the tournament by not allowing a single
goal in two games, which spanned 90 minutes altogether. Upon
completion of the game, SU senior defender Justin McGrath
(Perry Hall, Md.) was honored as the Most Valuable
Player of the tournament.
The defensive units from Salisbury (3-0) and Richard Stockton
(2-1) were both impressive through the first half as the teams
allowed only eight shots combined, only two of which were on goal.
The second half proved to be much different as the Sea Gulls
blasted 16 shots (five on goal) at Osprey goalkeeper Anthony Pompei
(six saves). Salisbury head coach Gerry DiBartolo
felt the difference in the halves was SU's ability to
reverse fields, spreading the Osprey defense, then attacking
the space that was created.
The contest remained tied until Mundy's goal, which snapped
the scoreless streak at just over 75 minutes. Salisbury
capped its scoring in the contest just 10 minutes later when
Callahan took a dish from senior midfielder Kyle Sterling
(Salisbury, Md.) and ripped a shot past Pompei. SU
goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff (Salisbury,
Md.) made three saves to earn his third win of the
season. Salisbury has not surrendered a goal all season.
The maroon and gold held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2
margin in corner kicks.
Salisbury will look to keep up its momentum as the Sea Gulls
participate next weekend in the St. Mary's Classic. SU will begin
play in the tournament against Bridgewater (Va.) College on
Saturday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.
