LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 17 Salisbury
University men's soccer team needed three extra minutes to wrap up
a 1-0 win in overtime over the Presidents of Washington &
Jefferson College on Saturday evening on day one of the
Shellenberger Classic held at Lynchburg College.
Salisbury (4-0) took advantage of its ninth corner kick of the
game as junior standout Kyle Sterling headed the
ball towards the net but Presidents goalie Tyler Hodgins (three
saves) was able to tip the ball off the crossbar. Sophomore
Mike Napolitano was there, in front of the net,
and scored the game-winner off the rebound.
Salisbury outshot Washington & Jefferson 16-10 and took nine
corner kicks while the Presidents had none.
The Sea Gull defense posted their third shutout in a row and it
came against a very good Washington & Jefferson team, who
received a NCAA tournament berth last season after they captured
the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship.
Anchored by junior goalie Greg Wellinghoff
(four saves), the defense has been rock solid this year as they
have only allowed one goal in four contests. Defenders senior
Ryan Chacon, junior Justin
McGrath and sophomore Joe Rubel have been
together for over a year now and have provided Wellinghoff with
some excellent defensive play thus far this season. The Gulls have
begun ‘08 where they left off in ‘07 as they allowed
just one goal in their final seven games last season.
SU will take a scoreless streak of over 300 minutes into
tomorrow's game against Moravian College at 3 p.m. for day two of
the Shellenberger Classic in Lynchburg, Va.
