SALISBURY, Md.- Junior
midfielder Alex Hargrove ended the suspense on
Sunday afternoon as he scored the overtime game-winning goal for
No. 22 Salisbury University to hand the Sea Gulls a 1-0 win against
a tough Keene State College squad. The Sea Gulls (2-0-0) claimed
the Elmer Lord Memorial Soccer Classic champion's title with their
second victory in as many days.
Hargrove ended the 0-0 deadlock six minutes into the first
overtime. He slipped behind Keene State goalie Peter Kersker (two
saves) and fired home a pass from junior midfielder Kenneth
Price to end the game. Sophomore Joe
Rubel was also credited with an assist. Hargrove was named
the tournament's Most Valuable Player for his play during the
two-day classic.
Salisbury's defense recorded its first shutout of the season as
the Gulls didn't allow an Owl shot in the first half. SU junior
goalie Greg Wellinghoff made three saves in the
win.
The contest was very physical as 47 fouls were committed by the
two teams. Salisbury outshot Keene 13-7 while the Owls (0-1-1)
totaled four corner kicks to SU's three.
Earlier in the day, St. Mary's (Md.) College defeated the
Vikings of North Park University, 1-0. SMC improved to 1-0-1
on the year with the victory. Senior forward Bernard Agyingi
tallied the game-winning goal with 8:30 left in the second
half. SMC senior midfielder Peter Krech was credited the assist on
the goal.
Salisbury will return to action on Wednesday, September 3, when
the Sea Gulls host Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College at
4 p.m.
