No. 2 Salisbury vs. Berry College
The second ranked Salisbury University men’s lacrosse program opened its season on Sunday, February 3 defeating Berry College 9-7 at Sea Gull Stadium. Corey Gwin opened the 2019 season scoring, tallying his first marker of the season just over five minutes into the first frame. Gwin would go on to score the game winner in the fourth quarter that put the team ahead 6-5. Josh Melton finished the game as the maroon and gold’s leading scorer netting four goals in the contest to aid in the win. Melton tallied his first goal in the first quarter before netting three during a four-goal fourth quarter. However, the day belonged to junior goalie Brandon Warren, who recorded a career-high 17 saves for the afternoon. Warren was solid start to finish in the season debut and was at his best when he needed to be making four saves in man-down situations to aid in holding Berry to a 1-of-6 mark on man-up opportunities. Warren played the biggest in the biggest moments of the contests posting six saves in both the second and fourth quarter. His biggest play of the game came in the final minutes of the game the Sea Gulls held a 9-7 lead but faced a man-down situation. However, Warren stood tall turning aside two shots in a 14 second span to kill the Vikings momentum and secure the win. Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, February 9 when it travels to No. 20 Lynchburg College. Faceoff between the Sea Gulls and Hornets is scheduled for 1 p.m.
