Sea Gulls leap to No. 2 in latest USILA coaches' poll
BALTIMORE - The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) released its weekly Top 20 coaches' poll on Monday and Salisbury University ascended to No. 2. The Sea Gulls (15-3) garnered four first-place votes and 169 total points as they moved up three spots. This is the highest the Sea Gulls have been ranked since March 23 when SU was ranked No. 1.
Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson University (15-1) returns to the top spot as the Mustangs collected four first-place votes and 174 points. The Sea Gulls and Mustangs split the season series. Stevenson won the regular-season game 12-8 on April 4 at Sea Gull Stadium. SU turned the tables in the CAC championship with a 13-5 victory on the road en route to the program's 15th consecutive conference crown.
Former No. 1 Roanoke College (17-1) dropped to No. 3 as the Maroons lost in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship to No. 6 Washington & Lee (15-3). Roanoke received one first-place vote and 156 points. Salisbury, Stevenson and Roanoke have all held down the No. 1 spot this season. SUNY Cortland (15-2) jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 as the Dragons collected 148 points. Gettysburg College (13-3) returns to the top five with 144 points after the Bullets spent the last three weeks at No. 6.
Salisbury will hit the road this weekend to face No. 11 Haverford College (13-3) in the 2009 NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament second round on Saturday, May 9, at 1 p.m.
