Berkman named an USILA Scholar All-American
BALTIMORE - The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced its 2009 Scholar All-Americans and Salisbury University senior midfielder Kylor Berkman was among 53 student-athletes honored.
The USILA Scholar All-Americans consist of Division I, II and III student-athletes. The Sea Gulls have had at least one student-athlete honored each of the last five seasons. Salisbury's Ben Sandlin and Matt Dasinger were honored in 2008 and Chris Heier received the honor in 2007. Jimmy Creighton and Mike Hurley garnered the award in 2006 and Jeff Bigas and Bryan Bradford did so as well in 2005.
Berkman closed out his senior season as one of the best players to ever to wear the maroon and gold. He is a three-time All-American first team selection, three-time National Midfielder of the Year and a two-time Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year in addition to being named to the All-CAC first team three times. The former National Player of the Year (2008) finished first on the team in points (83), assists (41), game-winning goals (three) and man-up goals (11) in '09. The co-captain was third on the team in goals (42) and fourth on the team in ground balls (49).
Berkman concludes his career in the maroon and gold with 298 points and dished out 170 assists, both marks rank second all-time in program history. Berkman finished his career with 128 goals, 251 ground balls and 66 caused turnovers. The Salisbury, Md., native scored at least one point in 85 of his 86 games he suited up for the Sea Gulls. Berkman leaves with one of the longest point streaks in lacrosse history as he recorded at least one point in 69 consecutive games. The last time he was held pointless was on April 29, 2006 against Washington (Md.) College in Baltimore where SU won 13-7. In 88 percent of his career games he scored at least one point (76-for-86) and he netted at least one goal in 62 career games (72 percent).
The Scholar All-Americans are awarded to student-athletes who hold a 3.0 grade point average or higher and were named to an All-American team or have been chosen to participate in the North-South game.
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established in 1989 to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically, and as citizens of their communities. The overall team representing Divisions I, II and III is recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
