Hickman selected in fourth round of Major League Lacrosse draft

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Fresh off a second straight NCAA Division III national championship the Salisbury University men's lacrosse program saw another star-studded player drafted by a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) franchise.

On Wednesday night, the MLL held its annual collegiate draft on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology and in the fourth round SU senior attackman Matt Hickman was selected by the New Jersey Pride with the 33rd overall pick. Hickman was the second Division III player to come off the board in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft. The pick before the Pride in the fourth round the San Francisco Dragons drafted Lynchburg's Ryan Cranston.

Hickman, a two-time All-American, was one of three Sea Gulls named to the USILA All-American first team in '08. The Darnestown, Md., native led the team in goals (61), points (94), shots on goal (118) and was second on the team in assists (33). Last season, Hickman scored 75 goals and also accumulated 94 points. The All-CAC first team attackman concludes his four-year career at SU with 142 goals (eighth all-time in SU history), 53 assists and 195 points.

Johns Hopkins University All-American Paul Rabil was selected first overall by the Boston Cannons. Out of the five rounds (50 picks) only three Division III players and one Division II player was drafted. The remaining 46 picks were Division I players.

Hickman joins an extensive list of former Sea Gulls who have been drafted by MLL franchises in the past decade. Currently, six former Sea Gulls are playing in the MLL they include; Justin Smith (Philadelphia), Eric Martin (San Francisco), Kyle Hartzell (San Francisco), Mike Hurley (San Francisco), Jeff Bigas (Chicago) and Matt Dasinger (Chicago).

Major League Lacrosse, a 10-team professional outdoor lacrosse league, was founded in 1999. The MLL commenced play in June of 2001. The MLL is comprised of two conferences.
