Men's basketball tops No. 5 CNU on Barcikowski's heave
The No. 10 Salisbury University men’s basketball team got a buzzer beater on Saturday night to earn a 59-58 win against fifth-ranked Christopher Newport University in an important early-season Capital Athletic Conference affair. The Sea Gulls trailed through much of the game, with strong work on the offensive glass by the Captains, but Salisbury chipped away and a took a late lead thanks to buckets from Wyatt Smith, Justin Witmer, and Barry Bratten. Smith scored a game-high 17 points while pulling down eight rebounds and blocking five shots. He did the majority of his damage in the second half, getting 11 points and six boards after halftime. This put back and the ensuing foul shot gave Salisbury the lead late in the contest. Witmer was good for a dozen points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a key late three-pointer. And Gordon Jeter pulled down 11 rebounds, and scored nine points. But down two with 2.9 seconds left on the clock, junior Chad Barcikowski took over to give the Sea Gulls the win. Barcikowski scored nine points in the game as Salisbury is out to an 8-0 start on the year, seeing action again on December 28 and 29 at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
