Salisbury voted No. 4 in CAC preseason poll

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team is only days away from beginning its 2014-15 season, and the Sea Gulls will enter the year voted the No. 4 team in the Capital Athletic Conference's men's basketball preseason poll, the league announced on Tuesday.

Salisbury garnered 53 points in the rankings, just five points behind No. 3 Wesley College. Last season, the Gulls ended the year with a 10-3 record in the final 13 games, boosting their overall record to 14-12 and 9-7 in the CAC, while earning a conference tournament first-round bid.

With a good group of returning talent, the Sea Gulls will be led by the reigning CAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Gordon Jeter, this season; Jeter finished last year fourth on the team with 7.8 points per game and first with 6.3 rebounds per game. He will be joined by sophomore Charles Porter, last season's third-leading scorer (9.7 points per game) and leading assist man (2.2 per game), and senior Conor Strickland, who provides steady, veteran leadership at the point for SU.

The Sea Gulls are joined in the top five of the conference by Christopher Newport University and St. Mary's College of Maryland, which tied in the poll at No. 1 with 76 points and five first-place votes, each.

With Wesley just ahead of SU with 58 points, Marymount (Va.) University was ranked just behind Salisbury at No. 5 with 51 points to round out the top-five teams.

The Sea Gulls begin their season on Saturday, November 15, kicking off their 2014 Optimist Tournament at Maggs Physical Activities Center against Bryn Athyn College; the opening tip is set for 5 p.m.
